The campfire crackled, sending cinders skyward. They floated upward until for a brief moment, they were indistinguishable from the stars. Danny stood just beyond the fire’s warm glow, looking down from his perch atop Lookout Mountain. He could just make out the distinct silhouette of the ruined Coors plant, near the base of the flat-topped mesa. He pulled back his curtain of dark, unkempt hair and pressed a pair of beaten binoculars to his eyes. Over the rock formation, the lights of the Denver IsoHab towers twinkled.
“At least these poor bastards got windows,” he muttered to himself.
“Anything concerning?” Jess asked, drawing her tattered denim jacket tight around her shoulders. She stepped up onto the edge of the cement deck, once been part of the Cody “Buffalo” Bill museum.
“Nothing to report.” Danny had to crane his neck upward to address his partner, who stood at least a full head taller. “But, if we can see them, they can see us. Do we douse the fire? Or move farther away?”
