They made camp. An honest to God camp. Danny had forced the lock on the old abandoned fire lookout tower before hauling Prometheus — Jacob — up the many stairs. Letting the injured radio host recover in cleaner accommodations would reduce his chances of infection.
Jess insisted.
Danny didn’t mind. After months under the stars, who could say no to a wood burning stove, and a panoramic view of the Catskills, burning with the fire of autumn leaves? That’s not to mention the strategic value of their vantage point. Setting up a strong broadcast point for the next “Prometheus” show would be easy, as soon as the host recovered fully.
Jacob had spent most of the cross-country drive in shock, not saying a word until they crossed into Illinois. Even then, it was just a babbling expression of gratitude. The first real conversation came on their first night in the tower, lounging in stolen camp chairs to watch the sun sink.
“Now that we’re relatively safe,” he asked, “Can you tell me why you’re willing to get into a shootout over a stranger? I mean how did you even know who I am?”
