Danny took a sip of cowboy coffee, savoring the warmth more than the bitter taste. He had a heavier jacket stashed somewhere in the truck. But looking for it seemed like a pointless exercise. At any minute, the radio could crackle to life. Jess would jump up from her bedroll to start fiddling with her weird instruments, and Danny would have to toss everything back into the truck bed and drive.

Oh, how he was sick of driving.

In the past six weeks, Prometheus had kept quiet. Jess’s do-dads, and apparent encyclopedic knowledge of the man’s body of work, could determine whether it was a bootleg rebroadcast from one of his followers.

“Yeah, I remember this one,” she had remarked in the middle of an impassioned speech about seeing stars, and feeling the night breeze. “Made me think of my granddad, teaching me about constellations.”
