Eddie couldn’t tell the ground from the sky. Even the dark pavement of the highway didn’t stand out quite like it should’ve. The same wind shaking the sturdy cab of his wrecker, blew drifts of falling snow back across the highway, erasing that guiding line from existence.

If he squinted, Eddie could make out the tall reflective sticks marking the edges of the road. Everything else seemed not to exist at all; a white void.

A static-racked voice over the radio: “This is dispatch paging all available drivers in the Central Rockies zone, over.”

Eddie picked up his own radio, which gave off a chirp as he opened the line.

“Dispatch, this is Eddie Troy, Class three recovery driver oh-nine-seven. I’m in the area. Where’s the problem, exactly? Over.” The radio crackled as he released the talk button.

“Afternoon Eddie. We’ve got a distress beacon pinging just off the side of highway 131. North of where it cuts through Willow Creek, over.”
